Position Responsibility:

Oversee regular operations for Leonardo’s publication suite, including our flagship Leonardo Journal and occasional other projects published in partnership with MIT Press, including submissions and peer-review processes. 

Management of Editorial and Publishing Production

  • Work with the Executive Editor, Publications Committee, Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards to develop content, prepare and execute editorial plans. Assume day to day editorial production responsibility for Leonardo content published with MIT Press.   

  • Oversee Guest Editors, special issue and special section agreements.

  • Supervise Senior Editor on overall production operations, including:  

    • communication with MIT Press on editorial, scheduling and production matters.

    • maintaining internal scheduling and production responsibility for six journal issues per year, including selection and development of front covers in coordination with Creative Director, and preparation and posting of materials for Just Accepted and online supplementary material

    • publication composition and page review

  •  Lead editorial team: 

    • Manage editorial staff providing oversight and support for Senior Editor, Editorial Fellow and assistants; 

    • As needed, hire and train additional editorial staff, interns, freelance editors and proofreaders. 

    • Supervise overall editorial workflow, performance and internal communications.

    • Oversee manuscript development in collaboration with Senior Editor.

    • In coordination with the Executive Editor, participate in executive decisions on acceptance of peer-reviewed manuscripts in cases where reviewers’ recommendations conflict. Manage appeals process with authors, reviewers, and Publications Committee.

Other Editorial Leonardo Publications

  • Lead support for Publications Committee meetings, bring to the committee all publication developments, potential collaborators, requests for special sections, website content, grant applications, and other publication opportunities.

  • Serve as Editorial Office contact for Leonardo/ISAST editorial projects as undertaken, e.g. Leonardo Book Series, Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA), Leonardo Graduate Abstracts (LABS), Blog, Newsletter, Pub Pub, Leonardo Reviews, etc. Duties vary according to the project; may include project development, administration, consulting, serving as liaison with project managers, reporting, advising on rights and permissions, quality control. Oversee I.P. rights, permissions and copyright issues for Leonardo publications and related content. 

Other Responsibilities 

  • Participate as needed in fundraising, including grant writing and preparation of written materials

  • Oversee internal archiving and filing systems, including digital and analog materials

  • Report to Leonardo/ISAST CEO, coordinating closely with Executive Editor, and Publications Committee Chair

  • Prepare quarterly reports to the board of directors on progress of responsibilities. Prepare status reports for the board and assist with the preparation of board meeting materials in collaboration with other team members. 

  • Occasional travel for conferences, training, networking opportunities

Other Duties: Marketing/Communications, Community Building, Contracts

  • Advise on contracts and agreements with third parties on publication projects as needed in consultation with leadership including President and Board Treasurer/Legal Counsel.

  • Advise/assist with other Leonardo/ISAST writing/editorial work, as needed such as the development of materials for marketing and promotion, outreach, fundraising, web content, grant reporting.

  • Outreach with editorial board, manuscript reviewers, authors, guest editors, editorial project managers and others. Assist in the development, planning, coordination and attendance at outreach events as needed.

  • Stay on top of relevant publishing trends, new and experimental publication formats, platforms and media.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in either academic editing, opinion editing, writing, or publishing.

  • Background in editing (writing styles/mediums) as well as research, proofreading, and copy-editing.

  • Mastery of written English with knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.

  • Understanding of publication workflows.

  • Experience managing teams, volunteers and contractors.

  • Knowledge of cloud-based software: e.g.., Dropbox, GSuite, Office 365, ClickUp, etc.

  • Leadership and foresight into media, content development and publishing.

  • Passion and curiosity at the intersection of art, science and technology.

  • Collaborative and collegial professionalism.

  • Grant Writing or other fundraising experience.

  • Proficiency at content strategy for website, social media, newsletters and correspondence.

  • This role utilizes extensive planning, interpersonal and organizational skills to optimize workflows, ensure consistent standards of excellence, and maintain efficient editorial program management.
