Amplifying the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Experience at a2ru and on Our Campuses

We are excited to take the next step to build on the a2ru scholars’ program, to allow for multiple channels of entry into our work, and to better lay the groundwork to ensure that a2ru is a more inclusive organization. For our annual meeting this year, we are debuting a panel of student voices who will speak to the Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) campus experience and how it can be improved. Aligned with our mission, we will be centering on the theme of the artistic and transdisciplinary experience on not only the university campus, but also specifically at a2ru events such as the student summit, the annual meeting, and webinars.

Panelists will speak from their own experience and address questions such as: How can a2ru/my campus better recognize and work to dismantle systemic racist practices? How may we ensure that our spaces are more diverse whether they be classrooms, conferences, or workshops? How can we ensure that we are not recruiting with diversity in mind, but no plan to retain BIPOC students and faculty? What structures are needed for those who identify as BIPOC to thrive, and how do we build them? How do BIPOC students approach the hypervisibility / invisibility on campus, at conferences, and in academia in general? How can we do better to ensure that, in the future, these students are not one of only a few BIPOC identifying individuals in the room / on the program?

If you are interested in giving a lightning talk that addresses any of the above, please submit a proposal at our a2ru 2020 National Conference Steps Toward Change website. The deadline to submit is Monday, August 31st at 5pm EDT. If you would like to nominate an individual to participate in this series of lightning talks, please contact a2ru Program Coordinator Charisse Willis with the details listed on the 2020 conference website. The deadline to nominate is: Monday, August 17th at 5pm EDT.
