Jelena Novak works in opera studies, performance studies, dramaturgy and criticism. She is FCT Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Studies of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM) at the NOVA University of Lisbon with the project "Opera beyond Drama". Novak focuses on tendencies in recent opera and music theatre, voice studies, music in the age of new media and multiplicities in music analysis. More recent work on (post)opera includes research into tendencies to ‘install the operatic’ in works of visual arts.

            Novak has been a founding committee member of the Society for Minimalist Music and a founding member of the editorial collective TkH [Walking Theory]. In 2013 she won the Thurnau Award for Music-Theatre Studies from the University of Bayreuth, Germany. Her latest book is Postopera: Reinventing the Voice-Body (Routledge, 2015). Currently she is working on a book project about 'opera in the expanded field' and is preparing co-edited volume “Einstein on the Beach: Opera beyond Drama” (Routledge, 2018).
