The NY LASER program is a series of lectures and presentations on art, science, and technology-related projects and an affiliate of Leonardo/International Society for the Arts, Science and Technology (ISAST). Ellen K. Levy, PhD, artist, writer, and co-editor of the "Science and the Arts since 1750” Routledge/Taylor & Francis Press book series, and Patricia Olynyk, artist, writer, and Florence and Frank Bush Professor of Art at Washington University co-chair the NY LASER program to foster high-level dialogue on topics of leading interest to a network of artists, scientists, humanists, and scholars. Feature speakers include Anita Glesta, Barbara London, and Carlton Newton.

Anita Glesta is a multimedia artist, whose works have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and public spaces internationally. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and commissions for her research-based projects. Her public art animation about anxiety, “UNNERVED,” was installed in downtown Melbourne on the face of the Australian Center for the Moving Image in 2022, and in 2023 as a multi-channel video installation, encompassing the 18,000sq ft area of “The Basilica,” Hudson Performance Space. 

Glesta will present her fellowship research at the UNSW School of Art, Architecture and Design, Felt Experience and Empathy Lab (The fEEL Lab), and share current animations that use sound and hand painted animated visuals, which explore the nuanced, enigmatic mind/body experience of our internal systems. 

Barbara London is a curator and writer, who founded the video-media exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art, where she worked between 1973 and 2013. London organized one-person shows with such media mavericks as Laurie Anderson, Peter Campus, Teiji Furuhashi, Gary Hill, Joan Jonas, Shigeko Kubota, and Nam June Paik. Her writing has appeared in catalogs and publications that include Artforum, Yishu, Leonardo, Art Asia Pacific, Art in America, and Modern Painter. She teaches in the Sound Art Department at Columbia University. 

London will discuss her recent projects, which include the podcast series, “Barbara London Calling” (barbaralondon.net), the book “Video Art/The First Fifty Years” (Phaidon: 2020), and the exhibition "Seeing Sound," currently being circulated by Independent Curators International. 

Carlton Newton’s artworks have often taken their procedural beginnings and interpretive clues from processes observable in the natural world. He is interested in the logic of cause and effect; how dynamic and fluid situations concretize their forms in time; and the way that invisible components can enter into the interpreted meanings of the work. Early scientific apparatuses and illustrations, the writings of D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson, the physics textbook photographs of Berenice Abbott, which he saw as a high school student, and the history of art all entwine themselves as inspiration.  

Newton is an emeritus professor of The Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has received awards from the American Academy in Rome, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council for the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
