About:

In his 1990 essay “Is There Love in the Telematic Embrace?“ Roy Ascott advocates for collaborative creative work between humans and machines, considering this collaboration has the “capacity to engage the intellect, emotions, and sensibility of the observer.” The LASER talks Fortaleza, in the effort of bridging East and West, invites researchers from film studies, architecture, and urban planning and performing arts to share their experiences in weaving collaborations, meditating on a ‘Cross-sectoral sensibility’ — a new creative practice, unnamed and unbounded, crossing the domains of art, science, technology, and philosophy, centered in none, and having its principal concern is with the mind, states of being, and the process of becoming (Roy Ascott, 1996/1997, “Technoetic Aesthetics 100 Terms and Definitions for the Post-biological Era.”). As highlighted by Edward A. Shanken, Ascott extended the parallel he drew between the forms of art and science to include non-Western systems of knowledge, and from the 1960s and 1970s, he visually suggests equivalences between I Ching hexagrams, binary notation of digital computers, scatterplots of quantum probability, waveforms of information transmissions, and biomorphic shapes. The I Ching Hexagram 8 that inspires the design for the event’s poster— ‘holding together’ — embodies the essence of unity and mutual support, and offers timeless wisdom for our relationships and collaborations. The Hexagram 8 highlights the importance of bonds formed not just out of necessity, but from mutual respect and shared values.
