The NY LASER program
 is a series of lectures and presentations on art, science, and technology-related projects and an affiliate of Leonardo/International Society for the Arts, Science and Technology (ISAST). Ellen K. Levy, PhD, artist, writer, and co-editor of the "Science and the Arts since 1750" Routledge Press book series, and Patricia Olynyk, artist, writer, Florence and Frank Bush Professor of Art at Washington University co-chair the NY LASER program to foster high-level dialogue on topics of leading interest to our network of artists, scientists, humanists, and scholars. Our November 12 event will focus on recent projects, feminism, and reframing narratives and feminist Interventions in media art festivals. Feature speakers include Judith Brodsky, Lisa Cartwright, Anna Frants, and Natalia Kolodzei.

SPEAKERS BIOS:

Judith Kapstein Brodsky is an American artist, curator, educator, and author known for her contributions to feminist discourse in the arts. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, and an M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. She is Professor Emerita in the Department of Visual Arts, Mason Gross School of the Arts, at Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. Brodsky is the Founding Director of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, which was renamed the Brodsky Center in 2006. That same year she was also co-founder with Ferris Olin, of the Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities at Rutgers University. She is past national president of ArtTable, the College Art Association, and the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA). Judith will discuss her recent book, Dismantling the Patriarchy, Bit by Bit: Art, Feminism, and Digital Technology, published by Bloomsbury Art and Culture in October 2021, which provides a history of digital art through a feminist lens.  

Lisa Cartwright is Professor of Visual Arts and Director of the Practice Concentration in the Art History, Theory and Criticism PhD Program at UC San Diego, where she is also appointed in Communication and Science Studies and affiliated with the Design Lab and Critical Gender Studies. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale, and her books include Practices of LookingScreening the Body: Tracing Medicine’s Visual Culture, and Moral Spectatorship. Professor Cartwright’s talk, ‘Embodied Pacific: ocean field sites and feminist data materialism’ will move through projects of four artists from the Getty PST Embodied Pacific project: Claudine Arendt, Catherine Eng, Ana Gloria Rodriguez, and Ale de la Puente. These will be featured in a chapter from a book on feminist sciart theory and history that Cartwright is working on with Nora Vaage, Merete Lie, and Anja Johansen (NTNU, Trondheim). 

Anna Frants is an artist and curator in the field of media art. She graduated from the Vera Mukhina Higher School of Art and Design (Leningrad, USSR) and Pratt Institute (New York, USA). Cofounder of the nonprofit cultural foundation St. Petersburg Arts Project, CYLAND Media Art Lab and Cyfest festival. Frants’ interactive installations have been showcased at Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (Russia), Video Guerrilha Festival (Brazil), Manifesta 10 Biennale (St. Petersburg, Russia, 2014), Museum of Art and Design (New York, USA), Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia), Chelsea Art Museum (New York, USA), Russian Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia), Kunstquartier Bethanien (Berlin, Germany). The artist’s works are in the collections of Russian Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia). Anna will discuss reframing narratives and feminist interventions in media art festivals. 

Natalia Kolodzei, an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, is a curator and art historian. She is Executive Director of the Kolodzei Art Foundation (a US-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public foundation established in 1991), and, along with Tatiana Kolodzei, owner of the Kolodzei Collection of Eastern European Art, containing over 7,000 artworks (paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photography, kinetic and digital art) by over 300 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.  Ms. Kolodzei has curated over eighty art exhibitions in the US, Europe and Russia. She is an author and editor of multiple publications and organized and contributed to symposiums and panel discussions for universities and museums worldwide, including co-chair Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous (LASER) CYLAND Talks. Natalia will discuss reframing nonconformist and media art narratives through the prism of a feminism.
