Nelson will discuss and share the many ways he mixes art and mathematics. His approach is empirical and quite unsystematic when compared with “real” mathematicians. Nelson is always hunting for algorithms and formulas that produce number patterns that can be mapped into musical parameters – melodies, rhythms, the sounds of instruments. Nelson experiments with seedable random numbers, Lindenmayer systems, fractals, and Markov Chains, among many other techniques, to create art. If he fails to understand the math, or if the math fails to help him make art, he moves on.
Nelson is a classically-trained composer, therefore he approaches his work from that direction with math crashing in from the other side. When math and music collide, he asks himself, “Is this art?”
