Chaired by Irtiza Nasar, designer with a background in physics from London College of Communication and part of the Creative Computing Institute, this discussion intends to make people grasp the materiality of the environmental and social issues that surround the Information and Communication Technologies.

From the scientific research of E-waste by Dr Sophie Quinton to the artistic approach of the PhD student Daniel Beck, we will open a discussion on the social and cultural changes that may influence the digital world for a more sustainable foreseen future. In this journey, we will understand PhD student Sayash Kapoor how the immateriality of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies and data likewise contributes to environmental waste and the social and ecological impact of e-waste in Ghana witnessed by Artist Ibrahim Mahama. The event intends to reveal the hidden cost of the digital world and to reach a systemic view to this problem.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Daniel Beck (PhD Student - London College of Communication)

Daniel Beck’s work brings together sculpture, installation, live performance and experimental film through a sound focussed art practice that aims to challenge people to consider their connection to the environment, their communities and their understanding of the world around them. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Unripe Gallery, London and commission of sound sculptures for the British Museum.

Daniel is also Trustee at the UK Green Film Festival, an annual nationwide environmental film festival, where he held the position of Festival Director from 2013-2020 and is currently an Associate Lecturer in Music Technology at London Metropolitan University. Daniel’s research aims to discover how the interplay of sound and naturally occurring environmental effects such as temperature, humidity and radioactivity can influence our understanding of ‘place’ within our natural environment and how focussing on the qualities of this exchange, through an interdisciplinary sound art practice, can reveal positive associations that reconnect us with the environments that we inhabit.
