Registration is closed for this event
The Leonardo/ISAST LASERs are a program of international gatherings that bring artists, scientists, humanists and technologists together for informal presentations, performances and conversations with the wider public. The mission of the LASERs is to encourage contribution to the cultural environment of a region by fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and opportunities for community building to over 40 cities around the world.

Entangled Futures is a series of eight lectures and six workshops, curated by Maite Pastor Blanco and Laurane Le Goff (MA Art & Science, CSM). The programme aims to provide creative learning regarding the current ecological change by understanding and re-thinking some of the challenges from the Anthropocene. This body of work functions as a bridge between existing sustainable practices within and outside UAL and as a cross-pollination of knowledges through interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches.

An interactive lecture both online and in person at Central Saint Martins (room C202), Tuesday 9th November from 5.30pm to 7.30 pm GMT.

This third event in a series of eight, is an interactive lecture that will offer an exploration of soil from its composition and sensorial perception to the value of its preservation when it comes to food and water security. Discussed between a scientist: Dr Ashish MALIK (Microbiologist), two artists Lukus ROBINS (Artist and Creative Producer) and Lucy DUKES MCALLISTER (MA Art and Science student) and an activist and eco feminist: Adenike OLADOSU (Ecofeminist and Activist from Nigeria); the topic will be approached from their very diverse of expertise. We will connect the scientific facts to more sentient approaches and to socio political challenges related to soil, asking the audience to respond to exchange questions in real time.

Adenike Oladosu (climate activist and ecofeminist) Oladosu Adenike Titilope is a first class graduate of agricultural economics, an eco-feminist, climate justice activist from Nigeria. The founder of ILeadClimate pioneering the green democracy initiative for peace building. She’s an awardee from Amnesty International as an ambassador of conscience recipient. Lucy Jane MacAllister Dukes (Artist, MA Art and Science) Lucy is an interdisciplinary artist and philosopher studying MA Art & Science at Central Saint Martins. To her art, science and philosophy are all one thing. She is fascinated by light and colour, painting and drawing with found materials. Lucy’s currently investigating the patterns of connection and communication between humans and other-than-humans, which exist at different levels of observation throughout the universe: from mycelium networks, to neural pathways, to the structure of the internet and the distribution of light and dark matter in the cosmos. Based in the countryside in the U.K, Lucy takes inspiration from their other-thanhuman surroundings to question the binaries humans construct and imagine a different possible future. @lucyjmd_ | website `

Dr Ashish Malik (Microbiologist) Ashish Malik is a lecturer in Biogeochemistry at University of Aberdeen and his research focusses on understanding soil microbial processes involved in carbon cycling. They study how carbon cycles in the biosphere from the perspectives of individual microbial cells, complex communities and ecosystems as a whole. A key objective is to determine how land use and climate change affects microbial physiology, carbon cycling and thus ecosystem functioning. He is also keen on improving research culture, engaging with other sectors, communicating science with the public and promoting diversity and inclusivity in academia and beyond. Lukus Robbins (Artist and Creative Producer) Lukus Robbins is a Bristol based, award-winning creative producer and socially-engaged artist. Lukus is all about connection, finding new ways for us to feel empowered to share our narrative. Lukus designs work using devised theatre techniques, digital technology and the dramaturgies of place to put people at the centre, allowing for multiple levels of engagement. His work is always considerate and inspired by what makes us human and how designing simple interactions can help us engage with sensitive cultural issues in an open, evolving and playful way. In the last two years his practice has seen him re-shift his focus to explore the environmental crisis and how we are adapting, coping and responding in the face of environmental change. Often when we talk about environmental issues we have feelings of hopelessness, frustration, shame, guilt or disconnect. Lukus wishes to find out how we can collectively unearth feelings of hope, connection and fascination by forming a symbiosis with the regenerative natural systems that support us.
