WHAT TO EXPECT / CURRICULUM!

LECTURES

Daily lectures, delivered by UCLA professors and a team of Sci|Art Instructors, serve to highlight historical perspectives and modern trends at the interface of art, science and technology. A collection of special seminars given by leaders and visionaries in the fields of art and science supplement the course materials. All taking place in the world renowned California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI).

WORKSHOPS

At the Sci|Art Lab + Studio, a strong focus is placed on student participation and learning in action. A number of participatory workshops have been specifically designed including: magnetic fluids, photolithography, solar cells, electronic prototyping, acoustics, bio-toxicity, bio-luminescence, self-assembly, molecular gastronomy, renewable energy and more.

LAB VISITS & FIELD TRIPS

Getting outside the classroom and seeing where the action happens in real-life is another crucial aspect of the  Sci Art lab + studio curriculum. Students are provided the opportunity to visit a variety of locations in and around Los Angeles including: CNSI Core Research Labs, Hammer Museum, UCLA Basic Plasma Research Facility, Jet Propulsion Lab, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), UCLA Anechoic Acoustics Laboratory, California Science Center and the Getty Conservation Institute. Last year students went to Venice Beach to sample planktons and play on the beach!

SCI-FI FILM SERIES

An undeniable connection between science, culture, imagination and creativity has undoubtedly manifested through science fiction writing and film. To facilitate a conversation regarding the historical impacts of science fiction on both popular culture and ongoing trends in technology, a Sci-Fi Film Series is curated by the Sci|Art Team. Many evenings are spent watching movies and making connections to the science learned during the day.
