Background:

Anna Davidson Consulting is a small company who builds art collections at the nexus of art, science and technology. We are currently seeking proposals from artists for a commissioned piece of art for a scientific research company called Calico located in South San Francisco, CA that studies the science behind aging at the genetic, cellular and whole organism level. We are working with concepts such as immortality, mortality, moving through time, timelessness, science, aging, and the idea that it takes many failures to find a success. Genomes from model organisms used in this research included the Naked Mole Rat, nematodes, yeast and human. Our goal is to relate the artwork to the research objectives of Calico.

We are open to many kinds of media including: sculpture,  bioart, moving image, drawing, painting, new media, photography, mixed media and contained sound pieces. The artist must be willing to sign a contract.

 

Budget Offered:

The maximum budget offered is $8,000 which must include materials, time, travel, research, and installation costs.  

 

Format:

Proposals should be emailed as a single PDF  and include all of the following:

  • Your CV
  • No more than 1 page of written description of the work including how the work relates with a theme or multiple themes described above
  • Dimensions and materials
  • Basic budget (if selected we will ask you to do a detailed budget)
  • Drawings, measurements, etc., that you feel relevant to the project that will help us to understand the concept
  •  Your contact information (phone and email) and a link to your website or previous work.

 

Deadlines:

Proposals should be emailed to Anna Davidson at adavidson@ucdavis.edu no later than midnight pacific time, August 30th, 2019. Early submission is encouraged.

You will receive a decision by September 30th, 2019

Art needs to be completed and installed no later than April 1, 2020.
