Devon Schiller is a cultural semiotician and media historian. His scholarship centers on the facial expression of emotion, and how methods of experimentation as well as modes of visualization inform models of the face in society, with a focus on biometric art that uses facial recognition and the semiotic temporalities of facial behavior. 

The recipient of a DOC Fellowship from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Schiller is currently pursuing a Doctorate in the Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, at the University of Vienna. He holds a Master of Arts, Advanced in the history of media art from the Department of Image Science at Danube University, Austria; Bachelor of Fine Arts in both art history and studio painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, USA; and is an alumnus of the cultural heritage conservation program at the Studio Arts College International, Florence, Italy. 

Schiller has also trained in the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) at the University of California at Berkeley; certified in the Neuropsychological Gesture Coding System (NEUROGES) at the German Sports University Cologne; and conducted postgraduate research supported by the European Commission's Erasmus+ Program on facial recognition technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen, Germany.
