Stephen Wilson, Is Anyone There?,
interactive video installation, 1993.
A computerized
telephone system made hourly calls to selected pay
telephones in San Francisco during 1 week in 1992;
passersby who answered were then engaged in
conversation by a digital character. Later, at an
interactive installation, viewers could explore life
near these telephones by calling up the recorded
responses and viewing digitally manipulated
