Artist: Valentina Barucci
I create artwork as a sort of emotional compendium of my mathematical work. In mathematics, the emotions related to finding the solution to a problem or to stating and proving a theorem never find space in scientific publications. | (acrylic and collage on cardboard, 1987) |
Via Fax Working (acrylic and collage on cardboard, 1997) | Two of my works are aimed at leaving a trace of this kind of "mathematical emotion." This is why the collages include pieces of scientific papers and faxes exchanged with fellows. |
In this framework the reference to Escher is unavoidable insofar as the Dutch artist expressed in such an admirable way the antinomy art-science, appearance-knowledge. I choose to work with acrylic paint because of its versatility: it can cover as completely as oil paint or have the transparency of watercolor. | Freesias and Mimosas in Semigroups (acrylic and collage on canvas, 1998) |
