Topic:

Naming Crisis in Russian Orthodoxy and European Mathematics:

In 1913 Tsar Nicholas II ordered to storm Monastery Pantaleimon of Mount Athos where the heresy of Name Worshipping had created a big crisis. At the same time, the introduction of Set Theory and naming infinities by Georg Cantor was first supported by French mathematicians but then was opposed by them. Two Russian mathematicians took this theory and created the great Moscow Mathematical School. The talk explores these topics with emphasis on the impressive stories of the lives of involved mathematicians.
