LASER Talks in Channel Islands

Registration is closed for this event
LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) is Leonardo/ISAST's international program of evening gatherings that brings artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations.

CHAIRED BY: Jane Change Mi

This LASER Talk will focus on our relationship to place, land and sea.

Specifically, these practitioners were selected for their local connection and/or involvement with nature and the landscape. The coastline of California from Malibu to Point Conception including the Northern Channel Islands is a traditionally Chumash land and we hope that the Wishtoyo exhibition and LASER talk will act as a conversation starter, addressing the significance and importance of this place.
The LASER Talk will be opened with Chumash blessings from Raudel Bañuelos, director of CSUCI's Facilities Services.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

James David Adams - Professor
Dr. Adams received his PhD from UC San Francisco in 1981 in Pharmacology and Toxicology. He served as a research assistant professor at Washington State University before coming to USC School of Pharmacy in 1987. Dr. Adams is currently working on California medicinal plants. He was trained for many years by Chumash people and is a Traditional Healer. He has written many books and articles on Traditional Healing.

Ted Garcia - Chumash Stone Carver
Ted is a Native American artist and the Chief of his band of the Chumash Tribe from the San Fernando Valley in California. He is a leader of numerous Native cultural events, which include traditional songs, storytelling and stone carving. He studied Chumash soapstone artifacts to understand the ancient culture’s subjects and style. Ted’s carvings draw from the spirit within the locally gathered soapstone that carries the spirit of the land where Ted’s ancestors built the thriving and complex Chumash society over countless generations.

Stacey Switzer - Fathomers
Led by curator and executive director Stacy Switzer, Fathomers now sets the stage for groundbreaking collaborations from Los Angeles, cultural nexus of science, technology and contemporary art. Fathomers is a creative research institute dedicated to producing sites and encounters that challenge us to live and act differently in the world. We cultivate the ideas of die-hard dreamers, commission projects that seem far-fetched, and enlist expansive thinkers across disciplines to redefine the limits of scale, scope and support for artist-led projects.

Aurora Tang - Curator
Aurora Tang is an independent curator and researcher based in Los Angeles. Since 2009 she has been a program manager at The Center for Land Use Interpretation. From 2011–2015 she was managing director of High Desert Test Sites. She currently teaches at Otis College of Art and Design, and is faculty at the Southland Institute. She is on the Board and Council of Common Field.
