@ the Crossroads ::: where do our bodies go from here?
Saturday, January 16th, 2021 9am ET / 2pm UK / 3pm CET / 10pm Singapore
(Washington, DC) – Third Space Network & University of Brighton/School of Art/Centre for Digital Media Cultures announce Telematic LASER: online public dialogues, performance, and experimentation among leading artists, researchers, and scientists at the intersection of art, telecommunications, and society. The series of online panel discussions is a program of the Leonardo International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology.
The first panel – @ the Crossroads ::: where do our bodies go from here? – features telematic performance specialists: Ghislaine Boddington (UK), Steve Dixon (SG), Paul Sermon (UK), moderated by Randall Packer (US). They will discuss the impact of the pandemic on the performing arts, peering into histories & futures of online performance art that creatively engage live audiences despite physical separation.
As performance ensembles and theater companies attempt to shift, en masse and yet apprehensively, to the virtual stage, they often find themselves confined to miniature boxes and a fixed frontal gaze where movement, speaking, play, and all the other essential elements of performance are compromised. The Telematic LASER panel will explore critical questions in live performance that now lie before us, as we find ourselves at the crossroads between the physical and the virtual, contemplating our next steps.
Telematic LASER is Webcast via the Third Space Network’s Crowdcast platform, activating public dialogue across the boundaries of the local & remote to a global audience. The series is co-hosted quarterly by Randall Packer of the Third Space Network & Paul Sermon of the University of Brighton, School of Art, Centre for Digital Media Cultures.
