LASER Talks Fortaleza

Theme: EXQUISITE
Judith Butler in her ‘Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory’ (1988) mentions that for both Beauvoir and Merleau-Ponty the body is understood to be an active process of embodying defined cultural and historical potentials, considering her own effort in “[…] examining in what ways gender is constructed through specific corporeal acts, and what possibilities exist for the cultural transformation of gender through such acts.” For the LASER talks Fortaleza this May we invited a group of artists and computer scientists that explore in their practice techno-cultural and political mechanisms that shape, mold, break, re-combine the informational complex we call human body and influence the emergence of expectations and definitions concerning gender, beauty and perfection, performance, functionality, enhancement. A surrealist exercise; exquisite.

Luiza Veras
An exponent among the generation of visual artists from Fortaleza, Luiza Veras has shown her work in solo shows and collective exhibitions in her home country and abroad. In 2018 she was one of the invited artists for the XIX Unifor Plástica exhibition integrating "A constellation for Sérvulo". The exhibition focused on the work of Sérvulo Esmeraldo linked to the Brazilian constructive / concrete tradition, paying a tribute to the artist. The project started in 1973 as a saloon and now is produced as a biennial exhibition of contemporary art. Luiza, who adopts the anagram Azhuli as an artist identity, presented two works produced in 2017 at Unifor Plástica - the series of six drawings, titled "Dysrhythmia" in which a replicating image of a woman provokes a sense of detachment and a self-portrait with a scar. Luiza studied Architecture and Urban Planning at UNIFOR for three years and works as an independent artist.

As an independent artist she has been producing collages combining more traditional techniques and materials with computational editing, integrating in her projects multimedia exploration such as data sonification. She has a diploma in Cinema and Video by the Casa Amarela project at UFC Federal University of Ceará. In her work she is interested in the relationship between bodies and space and the integration with digital media.

Intergalactic  - Maria Epinefrina and H-UMANO

The project 'Intergalactic' (2019) in exhibition at ‘Dragão do Mar Center for Art and Culture’ is a performance in which artists and computer scientists collaborate to explore body-space-technologies relations, discussing critically issues related to body enhancement by computer technologies and the integration as part of an internet of things (IOT). Intergalactic can be described as a conceptual body that unfolds in time and space. The director of the show Maria Epinefrina and the computer scientist and media artist H-UMANO present and critically discuss the proposal for the LASER talks Fortaleza. The project was born from the research "Modular Space: What space does my body occupy?" developed by Maria Epinefrina at the Federal University of Ceará UFC. Cast & Crew credits: : Direction: Maria Epinefrina / Creation: Maria Epinefrina, H-UMANO and Tiego Campos (digital art), Cozilos Vivos (soundtrack), David Leão; Dramaturgical Orientation: Armando Menicacci; Photography and poster: João Paulo Duarte de Sousa; Light: Walter Façanha; Technique: Gloria Mendes
