 “Eskin 4 the Visually Impaired”

New film documentaries about the workshop and performance from our media-art project at ISEA, the International Symposia on Electronic Arts in Durban, South Africa. These films show that visually impaired people can express their own local problems of climate change, work with complex movements and perform in a world of culture that is so visually dominant. Eskin 4 shows how an art and science platform was created to enable visually impaired participants from Durban, South Africa to become performers alongside their own stories about ecology. They were also encouraged to explore new orientation skills through real-time technologies and participate in a wonderful tribute about the biodiversity along the Durban coastline.

Sponsored by Pro Helvetia.

TEAMWORK TECHOLOGIES for COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Discussion after the films: Here the media art team will talk about the processes of this production:

Dr. Andreas Schiffler (Germany/USA) is a software engineer and physicist. He specializes in the field of data, analytics and big data applications. He will talk about the technical challenges to create stage ready systems with commercial hardware and software. http://www.ferzkopp.net/wordpress/2018/01/01/eskin-4-sensors/

Vanessa Barrera Giraldo (Swiss/Colombian) is an electronics and audio engineer who develops audio solutions for the hearing impaired. She will talk about how she became interested in designing interactive tools and sounds for visually impaired participants and the value of customizing sound tracks for people with visual impairments.

Prof. Marille Hahne (Swiss/German) is a filmmaker who is focused on documenting processes of art and science productions that affect society. Over many years she has practised a genre of documentary filmmaking which she calls Research mode, one that maps out the experience of working closely with the process of learning by this particular Zulu community.

Prof. Dr. Jill Scott (Swiss/Australian) is a media artist with many years of experience in ecology and neurosciene, who is interested in how tech-teamwork can provide this gift of a platform, one that can empower people with a new voice and confidence to speak out about local problems.
