LASER 6: Ecologies X Voice X Body X Atmosphere

LASER Hexagram Montreal’s sixth edition focuses on how movement is generated, when voices, bodies and atmospheres move together, multiplying new links between fields of research.

During the evening, there will be a fleeting encounter between poetry and dance in an atmospheric scenography entitled Atmospheresconceived by the Topological Media Lab (TML) and presented in their research-creation laboratory at Concordia University.

This ample ecology of practices will be induced by the poetry of Chantal Neveu (recited live) as well as the concept of ecocorporeality developed by Johanna Bienaise that emerges between dancers and choreographers and spectators. Nima Navab and Desiree Foerster will discuss their ongoing exploration of atmospheric media as it relates to ephemeral fields of light, water, air, sound and temperature. Their presentation will focus on the pre-reflective modes of sensing that enable to perceive dynamic changes in the environment that ordinarily remain outside perception.

Come and experience a new atmospheric spatiality. The public is invited to move with the presenters so as to create spontaneous flow together, where actions and thoughts circulate and are actualized.

With the participation of

Johanna Bienaise is a Professor in the Department of Dance at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) since June 2012 and a member of Hexagram-UQAM. She holds a PhD in Études et pratiques des arts and her research centers on the work of contemporary dance performers, pre-professional dance training and research-creation methodologies.

Desiree Foerster is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Arts and Media, University of Potsdam, Germany. Her research interests revolve around the study of embodied aesthetics in order to incorporate additional sensory modalities into spatial experience. With process philosophy and mediaesthetics, she explores the mediation of liminal experiences that place the human subject outside of any conscious reference to the world.

Nima Navab is a Research Associate at the Topological Media Lab. His research focuses on spatial design, and the role of art and technology that can increase interactions in intimate and large-scale spaces. Using a variety of mediums and approaches, he explores the different roles humans play in shaping the built environment that is ecological, political and sensory.

Chantal Neveu is a writer, performer and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal. She is the author of five books of poetry — La vie radieuse, coït, mentale (La Peuplade), A spectacular influence (L'Hexagone) and èdres (É = É) — and has created numerous interdisciplinary literary projects that draw on visual, performing, architectonic and media arts. Her solo and collaborative works have been produced and presented in Canada and abroad. She participates in many reviews and collective publications, and her books were translated from French to English (BookThug).

LASER Hexagram Montreal gratefully acknowledges financial support from Hexagram.
