She received funding from Alberta Art Foundation and Canada Council for a collaborative residency. Her works are in the collections of Alberta Art Foundation, University of Alberta Hospital and Alberta Art Gallery. Her work as a physician and administrator has enriched her art.

Lianne McTavish - Anatomical Looking in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century

Lianne McTavish explores the history of anatomical looking, understanding vision as an historically and culturally specific act. She emphasizes three rare early modern cases in which the active role of the designer of anatomical images was fleshed out in detail, discussing images of difficult birth, ectopic pregnancy, and dissected tapeworm fragments from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Lianne McTavish is Professor of the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, where she offers courses in early modern visual culture, the history of the body, and critical museum theory. She has published articles and books on early modern childbirth in France, bodybuilding culture, and natural history museums in Canada. Her current research focuses on, among other things, the cultural history of tapeworms, and the small town and rural museums in Alberta: albertamuseumsproject.com.
