LASER Talks in Hong Kong

Registration is closed for this event
LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) is Leonardo/ISAST's international program of evening gatherings that brings artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations.

CHAIRS: Dr. Lam Yun Wah and Erin Li

Self and non-self, allure and rejection: a lifetime relationship in art and science.

Experimenting in their own bodies the immune response of rejection, artist Marta de Menezes and Luis Graca depart from the experience of intimate collaboration, as a form of binding and differentiation.

Marta de Menezes is a leader and pioneer of the field known as bioart. She has been tempering in biology labs with scientific techniques for the creation of art and in the development of works that challenge and question scientific assumptions.  Her work has been exhibited widely internationally and inspired generations of artists and scientists to think beyond disciplinary boundaries.

Dr Luis Graca is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of Lymphocyte Regulation Lab at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal. His most significant scientific contributions have been related to the field of transplantation and autoimmunity: the science of distinguishing self and non-self. Graca has worked on strategies to overcome transplant rejection, as well as in the induction of immune tolerance in autoimmunity and allergy. He has collaborated with several artists, and artworks developed from these collaborations have been exhibited worldwide.

With some exceptions, the endeavour of scientists and artists have been historically pursued in different environments. In recent years an intersection between the two cultures – science and art – became increasingly common. As part of this trend, research laboratories started to be used by artists as studios for art production. There are, however, significant differences between the approach of artists and scientists when working in the laboratory. The differences and similarities between art and science, two activities based on creativity, will be discussed.

Join us next Wednesday 6th of November at Duddel’s Hong Kong for an opportunity to participate in this conversation on the intersections of art and biology.
