LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) is Leonardo/ISAST's international program of evening gatherings that brings artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations.

LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) is Leonardo's international program of evening gatherings that bring artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations. The talks were founded in 2008 by Bay Area LASER Chair Piero Scaruffi and are held throughout the Bay Area and around the world.

LASER is a program of Leonardo/ ISAST organized by the CADRE Media Lab at SJSU. The LASER Talks at SJSU are funded by the College of Humanities and the Arts through an Artistic Excellence Grant in 2018-19.

Caitlin Sadowski, PhD

Caitlin’s mission is to understand and improve the developer workflow at Google. She created the Tricorder program analysis platform, which makes static analyses scalable and usable at Google. She received her computer science Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she worked with Cormac Flanagan and Jim Whitehead on a variety of research topics related to Programming Languages (PL), Software Engineering (SE) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI).

Surabhi Saraf

Surabhi Saraf is a media artist and founder of Centre for Emotional Materiality. Her practice explores our complex relationship with technology through multimedia works that incorporate video installations, sculptures, performances, and sound compositions. Surabhi is the recipient of the Eureka Fellowship Award by the Fleishhacker Foundation (2015), the Djerassi Resident Artist Award (2012) and the Artist + Process + Ideas Residency at Mills College Art Museum (2016). She has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke in Mumbai and Hosfelt gallery in San Francisco. She has performed at the Thessaloniki Contemporary Art Biennial, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, NETMAGE 10 International Live Media Festival (Bologna), and Soundwave Biennial ((5)), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Her videos have been shown at TIMES SQUARE, New York, Blanton Museum, Austin, the Hunter Museum of American Art Chattanooga, TN and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Vojvodina, Serbia. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Time Out Sydney & Mumbai, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Blouin Art Info, Art Practical, and KQED Arts. Surabhi graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009 with an MFA in Art and Technology.

David McConville, PhD

Dr. David McConville is a media artist and researcher integrating storytelling and data visualizations to communicate scientific understanding. David is the Co-Founder of Spherical, an integrative research and design strategy studio based in Oakland, California. David also co-founded the Elumenati (elumenati.com), a design and engineering firm that creates custom displays installations for clients from art festivals to space agencies. He has served as creative director of the Worldviews Network (worldviews.net), a NOAA-funded collaboration of artists, scientists, and educators using immersive visualization environments to facilitate transdisciplinary dialogues in science centers across the United States. He has a PhD in Art and Media from the Planetary Collegium at the University of Plymouth.

Cere Davis

Cere Davis is a science-artist, kinetic sculptor and science educator based in the bay area of California. She has a degree in Physics from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and early career working in scientific fields ranging from volcanic lightning to liquid crystals to research at the South Pole station of Antarctica. Her works are analog experiments in emergent dynamics which bridge new forms of media/interactive art and kinetic sculpture. As a part of her work she collaborates with scientists and artists to inspire scientific curiosity and participatory learning through interactive art and critical making. She is the artistic director at Counter Culture Labs, Artist in Residence in Chabot Space & Science Center, and member of the Thingamajigs performance group. She produces, collaborates and participates in projects ranging from dance performance to science fairs and art exhibits. Her works have shown in galleries, science festivals, conferences and public outreach events internationally. She has been awarded the People's Choice award in 2015 at Oakland Aeolian Day for her acousto-kinetic sculpture and in 2018 by the Awesome Foundation for her opto-kinetic sculpture, Liquid Loom.
