LASER Talks in Liverpool

Registration is closed for this event
LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) is Leonardo/ISAST's international program of evening gatherings that brings artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversations.

CHAIRED BY: Mark Roughley

LASER Program:

The July Liverpool LASER is supporting the MA Art in Science takeover of Tate Exchange titled The Perception Machine

“In The Perception Machine, scientific experts from the fields of astrophysics to forensic anthropology have been invited to share new perspectives on selected artworks from Tate’s Constellations exhibitions that offer engaging possibilities for interdisciplinary interpretation. In their hands, artworks become cognitive, historical and cultural ‘lenses’, offering unexpected insights into formal design and technical processes, past realities and future prospects”

For The Perception Machine LASER our speakers will use their own research and experiences to discuss the possibilities that arise from Art and Science collaborations. We are asking the audience to consider questions during the LASER that include:

• What is the role of art in science, and science in art?

• Do scientists and artists understand ‘experimentation’ and ‘creativity’ in the same way?

• What is the difference between scientific and artistic ‘authorship’?

• Both art and science contribute to our understanding of ourselves within the known universe, but does art also contribute to scientific knowledge? What might this knowledge look like?

The Perception Machine LASER speakers are:

  • Kathryn Smith (Visual/Forensic artist) Strange attractors, or just a drunken conversation?
  • Dr Lee Haines (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine)
  • Prof Andy Newsam (Astrophysics Research Institute) Astronomy and Art: Universal Appeal?
  • Prof Mike Stubbs (FACT Liverpool) Imagination and uncertainty

The LASER takes place on Wednesday 4th July from 17:30 in the Clore Studio at Tate Liverpool. The Clore studio is adjacent to Tate Exchange and you will be invited to take part in The Perception Machine in Tate Exchange from 17:00-17:30 prior to the LASER.

Speakers will present for 15-20 minutes and then we will gather together at the end of the presentations for an informal open discussion for 20-30 minutes. Refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) are provided.
