Sheila Pinkel is an Associate Professor of Art at Pomona College, Pomona, California, where she teaches photography, computer graphics, photo history and media studies. She has also taught courses at the California Institute for the Arts, Valencia, California; Otis/Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles, California; School of the Art Institute of Chicago; University of Illinois, Circle Campus; and UCLA; as well as numerous workshops at a number of universities and centers throughout the U.S. She has exhibited her photographs and other artwork internationally for more than 20 years and has published her artworks and writings in numerous publications. She has lectured extensively at universities, museums, art centers and symposia and has organized exhibitions and lecture projects focusing on various topics relating to art and social issues. In 1981, she organized the first major cross-cultural exhibition of photography in Los Angeles, entitled "Multicultural Focus," held at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery Barnsdall Park. Pinkel has been on the Leonardo Editorial Board since 1983 and was guest editor of the Leonardo "Art and Social Consciousness" special issue published in 1993.
