G. Gessert was born in 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
He studied at the University of California-Berkeley, the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and Art Students League. He began as a painter,
printmaker and illustrator of educational materials. Since 1985 his work has
focused on the overlap of art and genetics. He has exhibited at the
Exploratorium (San Francisco), the Smithsonian Institution, Exit Art (New
York), Le Lieu Unique (Nantes), Zeche Zollverein (Essen), the Centraal
Museum (Utrecht), Centre of Contemporary Art (Seville) and elsewhere. His
writings have appeared in many publications including Leonardo, Art Papers,
Design Issues, and Northwest Review. His most recent
Leonardo article is
"Gathered from Coincidence: Notes on Art in a Time of Global
Warming" (Leonardo 40: 3, 2007) In 2005 he was awarded a
Pushcart Prize. Currently he
is editor for art and biology for Leonardo.
