Fig. 1. TVe, black-and-white photograph, 30 x 24 cm, 1975. This image, my earliest work, was created using television images as the source for the photograph. Instead of aiming my camera at the surrounding physical reality, I pointed to the new social role of electronic images (as a parallel reality) while undermining the photograph's ambition to present truth (the photographic image revealed an electronic representation rather than the object of the image itself). The title Tve refers both to television and to the Portuguese verb "to see" (as in ele vê, "he sees").
