Art and Biology in practice: An essay with Notations Artist:Ted Purves
(Above)Art and Biology in Practice: An Essay with Notations, installation of artists' books and framed texts, 1998.In presenting selected works by three visual artists (J.H. Kocman, Herman de Vries and Paul-Armand Gette) who were formally trained in the biological sciences, along with my framed commentaries, my aim was to show that the bridging of distinct disciplines contributes new methodologies---rather than new subjects---to the practice of art. The notion that the combination of art and science produces a branch of art that comments on the ideas of science is replaced by the idea that this combination generates a practicing of art with a science-based mindset.
