Shelley Cook, Adult Human Female, mixed-media installation, 1994. In this ongoing work I investigate the control of the body, objectification and powerlessness and the international struggle over reproductive rights. Papers on the floor and tables of the installation are copies of articles, petitions and statistics documenting local and international reproductive rights issues. Each exhibition of the piece begins with the disinfecting of wire hangers and the containment of a young woman in a large specimen jar during the opening reception. The literature is used for blotter paper between layers of disinfected hangers. A strong smell of disinfectant permeates the space.
