Fran Ilich Morales Muñoz Awarded
First Leonardo Scholarship for Media Art Histories

From a field of applicants from twelve countries on four continents, Mexican media artist, author and researcher Fran Ilich Morales Muñoz has been awarded the first Leonardo Scholarship in the Media Art Histories MA program at the Department of Image Science at Donau University (Austria). The jury, consisting of Edward Shanken, Jon Cates and Oliver Grau, selected Ilich from a highly competitive group of candidates based on his extraordinary accomplishments, intellectual sophistication, independent vision and entrepreneurial spirit. Green Light: Toward an Art of Evolution by George Gessert

Hybridized plants were first exhibited as fine art in 1936, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York showed Edward Steichen's hybrid delphiniums. Since then, bio art has become a genre; artists work with a variety of living things, including plants, animals, bacteria, slime molds and fungi. Many commentators have addressed the social and political concerns raised by making art out of living material. In Green Light, however, George Gessert examines the role that aesthetic perception has played in bio art and other interventions in evolution. Find out more

Leonardo Book Series author Eugene Thacker (The Global Genome) will speak at the Art, Technology and Culture Colloquium series at Berkeley Center for New Media, Berkeley, CA, on Monday, April 26, 2010. In his talk Thacker will explore the twists and turns of the idea of life itself as a key philosophical problematic in modernity, focusing on three main philosophical traditions: vitalism, phenomenology and a third, under-considered approach of the 'dark' or meontological concept of nothingness.
