The Institute of the Arts and Sciences and the Division of the Arts invites you to UCSC's LASER, 5 November, 6:45 p.m. at UCSC's Digital Arts Research Center (DARC), Room 108. The line-up of presentations includes Robert Dawson, photographer and instructor of photography at San Jose State University and Stanford University; artist and designer Amy Franceschini; interdisciplinary artist Jennifer Parker with Gene Felice, a graduate student in the Digital Arts and New Media program at UC Santa Cruz; and Bruce Schumm, a professor of physics at the UC Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics. NEXT LA LASER: 7 NOVEMBER
The UCLA Art | Sci Center will host its next LASER event on 7 November, 7–9 p.m. This LASER event will coincide with the opening of Josely Carvalho’s exhibition Diary of Smells: Shards, taking place at the Art | Sci Gallery, 5–7 p.m. The evening’s program will also include a special sound performance by Gil Kuno and Carl Stone. Kuno, Stone and Carvalho, along with fellow presenters Barbara Drucker, Chris Kelty, Shana Koening, Ted Meyer and Gareth Walsh, will discuss their work and the inspiration behind it. Join us for the next D.C. Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) on Thursday, 14 November, 6–8 p.m in Room 100 of the Keck Center, 500 Fifth St., N.W. This DASER event will commence with opening remarks by Niels Von Tomme, visiting curator at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Speakers will include Missy Cummings, associate professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems, and Director of the Humans and Automation Laboratory Human-Systems Engineering Track at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Marko Peljhan, artist and professor in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Department of Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and Peter Singer, Director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at The Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. James Housefield (University of California, Davis) recently reviewed Linda Dalrymple Henderson’s The Fourth Dimension and Non-Euclidean Geometry in Modern Art, published by The MIT Press as part of the Leonardo Book Series, in Choice Reviews Online: "Rarely does one find a work that accomplishes what Henderson (Univ. of Texas, Austin) has achieved so notably in this book; by looking closely at the historical record, she restores significant aspects of the intellectual and artistic climate in which much modern art was first seen. Henderson demonstrates how pre-Einsteinian notions of a spatial fourth dimension (not to be confused with time as the fourth dimension) were central to the ways modern art was conceived and discussed. . . . CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: TECHNARTE 2014
Technarte, the International Conference on Art and Technology, is an annual conference that aims to present technological developments that enhance a broader expression of modern art and to provide a forum for debate and reflection between technology and art. The next conference is set to take place in Bilbao, Spain, 29–30 May 2014. Technarte is currently seeking artists, researchers, developers, engineers and other experts in technology who have developed an interesting and innovative project on art and technology to participate in next year’s conference. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: IMéRA SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR
The goal of the IMéRA (Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Research) Foundation is to contribute to the emergence and development of world-class multi-, inter- and cross-disciplinary research approaches. IMéRA is currently looking for a new Scientific Director, who will assist the President and the General Director of the foundation over the course of a two-year, renewable mandate. The position is open to categories of professionals of all nationalities qualified to teach at the university level. The position will be vacant starting 1 March 2014. CALL FOR ENTRY: TRANSMEDIALE VILEM FLUSSER RESIDENCY
Transmediale is issuing a call to individuals conducting artistic research that actively explores the capabilities and limitations of transdisciplinary and transmedial methods in contemporary culture to apply for the Vilém Flusser Residency program. Transmediale is particularly interested in the use of artistic research in exploring the links between aesthetics, materiality and politics. MICROWAVE INTERNATIONAL NEW MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL 2013
The Microwave International New Media Arts Festival is an annual festival based in Hong Kong. This year’s festival, entitled "Terra 0," will explore space as a topic of scientific research and artistic imagination. Microwave International will commence on 2 November with a keynote conference featuring Richard Castelli (France), Sarah Jane Pell (Australia), Derrick De Kerckhove (Canada), Masaki Fujihata (Japan) and Rob La Frenais (U.K.). The festival will feature various exhibitions, workshops, symposiums and screenings until it ends on 23 November. Find out more
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: THE NEW MEDIA CAUCUS
The New Media Caucus, an affiliated society of the College Art Association, has issued a request for proposals of possible questions and topics for a panel and roundtable discussion on Thursday, 13 February 2014, during the College Art Association meetings in Chicago, IL. The session will address the emerging field of 3D printing in the context of art and technology and studio art, with a particular focus on pedagogy. The New Media Caucus is also seeking panelists to participate in a rapid-fire panel presentation consisting of 10 presentations, no longer than 6 minutes, 40 seconds each. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: AAH CONFERENCE
Although digital art preceded the creation of the World Wide Web in the early 1990s, digital art has only recently become firmly established as an artistic category. Yet the term remains nebulous and includes many disparate forms and types of art. The Association of Art Historians (AAH) is calling for papers to be presented in "Parsing the Pixelated: The Histories of Digital Art," an academic session organized as part of the AAH 2014 Conference taking place at the Royal College of Art, London, U.K., 10–12 April 2014. The session will explore the definitions of and approaches toward digital art, the digital as an artistic medium and its relationship to and within art history. Deadline to submit: 11 November 2013. CALL FOR PAPERS: VISIONS OF CONTEMPORARY CUTS
The Journal of Visual Culture, in collaboration with the International Association for Visual Culture, Operational and Curatorial Research, the Museum of Contemporary Cuts and Kasa Gallery, is pleased to announce a new peer-reviewed issue titled "Visions of Contemporary Cuts," guest edited by Leonardo Electronic Almanac editor Lanfranco Aceti of Sabanci University, Istanbul, and Goldsmiths College, University of London, U.K. The Journal of Visual Culture is calling on international scholars, curators, artists and thinkers to submit papers addressing and analyzing the contemporary economic crisis, as well as the meaning of the word "cuts" and how cuts affect contemporary society. CUriosity3, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
The next installment of CUriosity3, a free public seminar program investigating the intersection of art and science, will take place on Thursday, 14 November, 8 p.m. in 501 Schermerhorn Hall, Columbia Unversity.
