LEAF WELCOMES ANKER AND TALASEK AS CHAIR-ELECTS

The Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) has announced the election of Suzanne Anker as LEAF Chair-Elect, effective immediately, and JD Talasek as Chair Elect, effective February, 2014. Anker is a visual artist and theorist working at the intersection of art and the biological sciences. She works in a variety of mediums ranging from digital sculpture and installation to large-scale photography, to plants grown by LED lights. Talasek is the director of Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences (CPNAS), Washington, D.C., which is focused on the exploration of the intersections between science, medicine, technology and visual culture. For the past three years, Talasek has organized and moderated D.C. Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) events in Washington D.C. in collaboration with Leonardo/ISAST. NEXT UCLA LASER: 9 JANUARY 2014

Join us for the next UCLA LASER event on 9 January, 7-9 p.m. at the UCLA Art|Sci Center + Gallery, located in the California NanoSystems Institute, 5th floor. This month's LASER presenters will include Jessica Alfaro-Lynch of the Institute for Society and Genetics; artist Marek Buchwald; artist Elizabeth Sonenberg; graduate student Curtis Tamm; artist Hermione Spriggs; bio-artist Mick Lorusso; and psychologist David Kronenberg. This LASER will be preceded by an exhibition at the UCLA Art|Sci Gallery by Lauren Kronenberg, who will also be presenting at the LASER event. NEXT NYC LASER: 19 JANUARY 2014

Join us for wine and discussion on Sunday, 19 January, 4–7 p.m. at LevyArts (40 E 19th St., #3-R, New York) at the next NYC LASER, hosted by former LEAF Chair Ellen Levy on behalf of the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts and co-organized with former LEAF Chair Patricia Olynyk. The evening will consist of feature presentations by artist and interventionist Eve Moser discussing the HighWaterLine, a public work that visualizes climate change impacts via creative acts; University of Pittsburgh professor Mark Paterson summarizing the “Reconfiguring Sensation” art-science-theory initiative; installation and permanent public art artist Nina Yankowitz presenting 3D imaging and animation processes and an overview of her interactive installation piece Crossings; and a brief presentation by artist and educator Sherry Mayo. LEAF AT CAA: THE ART/SCIENCE CURRICULUM IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN THE CLOUD

In conjunction with the College Art Association’s 102nd Annual Conference (12-15 February 2014), the Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) will be presenting a panel titled “The Art/Science Curriculum in the Classroom and in the Cloud.” The panel, chaired by LEAF chair Adrienne Klein, will take place on 13 February, 12:30-2 p.m. and feature presentations from individuals who have developed or participated in instruction that has brought together art and science. The panel of presenters will include Paul Thomas (University of New South Wales), Kathryn Evans (University of Texas at Dallas), Jill Fantauzza (Texas State University), Ingrid Koenig (Emily Carr University of Art and Design) and Steven Zides (Wofford College). LEAF AT CAA: TIME AND SPACE CONCEPTS IN POSTWAR ART

The Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) invites you to attend “Time and Space Concepts in Postwar Art.” The panel will take place on 15 February 2014, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. as part of the 102nd Annual College Art Association (CAA) Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Its focus will lie in experiments with space and time in postwar-era art. Presentations will range from Peiko Tomii (PoNJA-GenKon) on Matsuzawa Yutaka’s cosmic conceptualism to Martina Maria Tanga (Boston University) on Ugo La Pietra’s artistic investigations in 1970s Italy. The panel will be chaired by Larisa Dryansky of the Université Paris-Sorbonne and Melissa Warak of Sam Houston State University. Find out more

CFP: AISB SYMPOSIUM ON COMPUTATIONAL CREATIVITY

In recent years the field of computational creativity has received growing attention from a widening range of researchers, motivated by a sense that work in the area has broad interdisciplinary implications. The contributions of philosophers, cognitive psychologists, computer scientists and artists are increasingly pointing to an open question: What would it take to convince a critical observer that a computational agent is behaving creatively? This symposium, sponsored by the Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behavior (AISB) and Goldsmiths, University of London aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss recent technical and philosophical developments in the field in order to asses the future of our relationship with computers and the way we perceive them. Topics of interest for this symposium include, but are not limited to: the evaluation of computational creative systems, processes and artifacts, theories of computational aesthetics; and representational issues in creativity. The Transdisciplinary Imaging Conference seeks papers that explore this year’s theme: the cloud and molecular aesthetics. The third international conference, to be held 26–28 June 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey, will bring together artists, theorists, scholars, scientists, historians and curators, and will focus on a critical investigation into the new objectification of the imaged world around us; the aesthetic, artistic, theoretical and practical implications of a new topography of data; our contemporary understanding of clouding, assembly and camouflage in a post-material age; and more. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: SUBTLE TECHNOLOGIES

In May 2014, Subtle Technologies will be holding its 17th annual festival in Toronto, Canada. The symposium, performances, workshops, screenings, exhibitions and networking sessions will provide a forum to explore ideas and pose questions at the intersection of art, science and technology. Subtle Technologies is known internationally for presenting artists and scientists whose work is at the cutting edge of their respective disciplines and creating a space for dialogue that leads to future discussions and collaborations. The theme for 2014 is “Open Culture.” The festival will celebrate the ways artists and scientists are creating and making use of tools and techniques to harness the collective power, knowledge and creativity of the citizen. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 2014 MESH CITIES ARTIST TOUR

Aotearoa Digital Arts Network (ADA) is seeking proposals from artists working in digital media, audio, video, intermedia and related fields to tour New Zealand giving masterclasses and/or workshops as part of the ADA Mesh Cities project. Proposals for workshops should include practical instruction where audiences and practitioners may learn new skills as well as participate in discussions about various aspects of media art practice, exploring issues such as inhabited spaces, social engagement, memory and speculative futures. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: HANGAR ART CENTER SPRING SESSIONS

Hangar is a centre for arts production and research in Barcelona, Spain, set up by the Association of Visual Arts of Catalonia (AAVC) in 1997. It provides support facilities for artists and designers and offers services adapted to production needs associated with the arts world. Hangar has issued an open call for their second edition of Spring Sessions, a series of intensive and interdisciplinary meetings between artists and other professionals to develop larger research projects. The call is addressed to collaborative projects that carry out theoretical and/or practice research while contributing to the transfer of knowledge between different disciplines. This year’s edition will take place over the course of one week between February and April and four weeks during the month of June, and seeks to support projects that address the issue of transferability in the field of art, science and technology. Sound, Sight, Space and Play (SSSP) 2014 is a conference for postgraduate students working in the creative sonic arts. Organized by postgraduate students of the Music Technology and Innovation Research Centre (MTIRC) at De Montfort University, the conference aims to stimulate cooperation and inspiration between postgraduate students across institutional boundaries and disciplines, leading to new perspectives on current works and research. SSSP encourages submission of papers and creative work, both completed and in-progress, individual or in groups, to be presented over the course of the event, which will take place 18–20 June 2014 in Leicester, U.K. Deadline to submit: 3 February 2014. Now in its fourth edition, ArtsIT has become a leading scientific forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge research in the area of arts, design and technology. The conference (6–8 November 2014, Istanbul, Turkey) aims to bring together leading researchers and practitioners from academia, the arts and industry to present their innovative work and discuss all aspects and challenges in a stimulating environment.
